Trading of secondary plastics and scrap metal on the Petersburg Exchange in January–September this year surpassed a total of 8,000 tonnes across the listed product groups.
Polymer secondary resources amounted to more than 3,000 tonnes for the first three quarters of the year. By comparison, total volume of secondary polymers traded in 2025 stood at around 400 tonnes.
In terms of specific items, the following volumes were recorded: HDPE film about 1,300 tonnes at an average price above 52,600 rubles per tonne; HDPE stretch film more than 200 tonnes at an average price of 41,000 rubles per tonne; HDPE rigid more than 300 tonnes at 51,375 rubles per tonne.
The Exchange continues to develop clear standardization conditions for circular economy commodities. It is actively expanding liquid trades of secondary raw materials: by listing on the exchange, waste does not reach landfills, said Dmitry Chernyshov, vice president of the Petersburg Exchange. In Russia, about 8 billion tonnes of various wastes are generated annually, and only 5% of industrial wastes go to recycling. The largest Russian holdings have incorporated the development of this market and the reuse of waste into their strategies. Secondary plastic raw materials have been traded on the Petersburg Exchange since 2024. This product is isolated in a separate specification of the exchange product in the Petroleum Products section, produced using secondary raw materials. Within the structure of scrap metal on exchange trades, pump- and compressor-tube scrap is sold on self-pickup terms by road transport; since the start of the year, 5,200 tonnes of this product have been sold. The ferrous scrap market is another development direction for exchange trades that helps attract new market participants; as a result of our joint work, the contract fully meets client needs. VAT is paid by the buyer. Available on social channels: VKontakte, Dzen, and T-pulse.
