According to the Expert Council on Coal Indices recommendations, the Exchange has approved the Petersburg Exchange's methodology for calculating energy coal price indices. The indices reflect the dynamics and a weighted average level of energy coal prices shipped by rail to production territories – major coal basins located within the Russian Federation.
The updated approach takes into account all recommendations of the Expert Council: large and small coal fractions are consolidated into a single 'sorted coal' category, the enrichment-based classification is eliminated, and index values will be determined and published in rubles per tonne of fuel. The methodology, and key information on the updated energy coal indices, are published on the Petersburg Exchange official site.
The first calculation of energy coal price indices under the new approach will be conducted in January 2027. The Exchange will continue calculating and publishing indices under the current approach through June 2027 to ensure a transition period.
Current and historical values of the new indices will be available in the SPX information-analytical platform. For updates, follow the Exchange on VKontakte, Dzen, T-pulse.
